Questions continue to swirl around a provincial correctional facility slated to be built in Kemptville.
On Thursday, Solicitor General Michael Kerzner joined North Grenville Mayor Nancy Peckford and Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes MPP Steve Clark to announce that Ontario is putting up to $21.8 million towards expanding the Water Pollution Control Plant in Kemptville to support construction of the Eastern Ontario Correctional Complex.
Peckford says the money from the province was requested years ago in order to pay for the added water usage that the new complex would require, and adds the tender for the project was awarded in April with plans already underway to expand it even without the provincial support.
When asked when construction on the 235-bed correctional facility, to be located on provincially owned land near Kemptville Campus, would begin Kerzner said details will be released in the coming months.
Peckford says she doesn’t have any more details on the facility.
“I have received absolutely no information on timelines, it’s not evident to me is it one year, three years, five years, I really don’t know and certainly the Solicitor General wasn’t in a position to provide any information.”
As for the concerns over a correctional facility being built here, Peckford says there has been a range of perspectives shared on it and adds one of the biggest concerns was the added pressure on infrastructure.
