Changes to water rates in North Grenville

The Municipality of North Grenville will be changing the base and consumption water rates.

Mayor Nancy Peckford says since the election of the new council, they had the opportunity to work with staff on a new five year water rate plan. She says the one put into place in 2015 saw a five-percent increase in both the base and consumption rate for town water. Peckford says residents and businesses were certainly feeling the impact of ongoing increases to their water bill over three years.

At the council meeting on Tuesday, council received a staff report where they had an opportunity to reconsider how they charge residents and businesses for water use in the municipality, according to Peckford.

“We were very pleased to in fact lower the base rate for water in our municipality if you’re on town water, and to adjust the consumption rate so that you are charged for what you consume versus obviously the privilege of having the water brought to your home or business.”

The base rate will be reduced by 37-percent, and the consumption rate has also been lowered for the first 12 cubic metres consumed in a month. A higher rate takes effect for additional cubic metres, according to the municipality.

North Grenville says a typical resident will likely see an approximate 6.6-percent decrease in their total annual bill. The new rates will take effect on October 1st, 2020 and people will see the changes on their bi-monthly water bills issued in December.
