OPP on the Trails

The Leeds detachment of the OPP is reminding the public they’ll be on snowmobile trails all winter long.

Members of the OPP will take to the trains to make sure riders are following the rules while enjoying the snow. According to the OPP many laws that can be applied to driving a car on the road also apply to snowmobiles. Speeding, failing to stop at a road crossing and driving while under the influence of alcohol all carry penalties like license suspension and criminal charges.
OPP Inspector Mark Francis says a rider with blood alcohol in the “warn range” can be issued the same 3-day warning as drivers on the road. He adds that more serious offences will result in a full suspension and that consequences are tougher for repeat offenders.

The OPP say riders following the law will have the following while operating their snowmobile:

-valid driver’s license or snow vehicle operator license
-proof of snowmobile ownership
-sled registration, including properly placed registration numbers and validation stickers
-proof of sled insurance
-approved snowmobile helmet
-valid Snowmobile Trail Permit
