Job Ad Scam warning

Police are warning the public about the latest scam to hit the area.

A local resident reported to police that she had answered a job posting for an elderly caregiver that led her down a strange path. After being awarded the job she was given a cheque for approximately $5,000 and asked to deposit it in an account at a nearby bank. She was told the account had been set up for wheelchairs and mobility accessories, and encouraged to keep $450 for a week of work.

When the victim tried to deposit the cheque she was told it was fake. Bank employees told police at least two other people had attended the bank with similar cheques and stories. Officers with Brockville Police Services are now asking to speak with anyone else who thinks they may have been a victim.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Constable Katie Kijewski at 613-342-0127 extension 6093. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or www.tipsubmit.com.
