The OPP have officially announced they will be hosting a tenth consecutive summer camp for indigenous youth.
Niigan Mosewak is put on by the OPP East Region Provincial Liaison Team and is for indigenous youth. The camp runs for a week, this year between August 14th and 18th, and the OPP say the focus is First Nations teachings, team-building, sports and various camp activities. Their goal is to foster positive relationships between indigenous youth and police, while encouraging youth to become leaders and role-models in their communities.
40 indigenous youth between 11 and 17 years old from across Eastern Ontario will attend the camp, which is being held at Camp Lutherlyn in Golden Lake. Camp instructors include police officers, indigenous youth mentors and qualified youth camp counsellors. The OPP say the camp program focuses on teaching key life skills, leadership, development, healthy relationships and positive self-esteem based on traditional culture teachings.
