The OPP have released the numbers following a four day traffic campaign.
Over the Civic Holiday Long Weekend the OPP ran a traffic initiative that focused on the ‘Move Over’ law, as well as more well-known dangerous behaviors like driving under the influence or speeding. A report released by the OPP says 177 charges were laid as part of the campaign. Those charges included; 19 failure to move over for emergency vehicle, six stunt driving, 10 seatbelt, three distracted driving, seven compulsory automobile insurance act, two impaired driving, 111 speeding, nine other moving violations and ten that fell under other on the highway traffic act.
According to police the ‘Move Over’ law states that motorists approaching emergency vehicles, stopped on the roadside, with their lights flashing must slowdown and pass with caution. If they are passing the emergency vehicle on a multi-lane road drivers must move into the far lane, if it can be done safely, and then reduce their speed. Police say breaking the ‘Move Over’ law comes with 3 demerit points and a fine between $400 and $2000.
The OPP thanked the public for their cooperation and patience during the campaign.
