Local employees want to be included in the discussions over how our country will deal with tariffs being imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Ontario Public Service Employees Union Local 493, part of the Leeds and Grenville Labour Council, represents employees at Northern Cables which has factories in Brockville and Prescott.
They recently held a town hall meeting over the tariffs and heard concerns from employees including that they could lead to layoffs, reduced hours and increase the cost of living.
OPSEU staff representative Alex Lane tells Moose FM they invited politicians of all levels to the meeting but many didn’t come.
“We just haven’t been engaged, nobody’s reached out to us and we’re not the type to just sit by and wait to be engaged, that’s why we called this meeting and invited those folks to meet with us.”
Lane adds that the meeting isn’t one and done and they plan to hold more meetings and engage politicians in the future.
