Police urging water safety over Canada Day long weekend

It’s expected to be a busy Canada Day long weekend on the water.

Police are reminding boaters that they should always drive sobre with the consequences for impaired operation the same as if they were on the road.

Grenville County OPP Constable Dave Holmes says the Leeds Grenville Joint Marine Unit will be out watching for impaired operators and making sure people are wearing their lifejackets.

He says that means you shouldn’t be using a flotation device you bought at the store in place of a lifejacket.

“A lot of those floaties are not meant to hold your weight for long periods of time and are susceptible to leaks.”

All operators of motorized boats in Ontario are required by law to have a Pleasure Craft Operator Card.
