Gaining silver by dropping the bacon.
That’s the story behind the latest success at Winchester District Memorial Hospital. In early November, bacon was eliminated at the hospital cafeteria. The staff also added healthier options such as homemade hamburgers with leaner beef and less salt, and new snacks with grains, nuts and seeds.
Hospital CEO Cholly Boland says it’s all part of the Healthy Foods in Champlain Hospitals program. Boland says they want the healthy choice to be the easy choice by providing better cafeteria food options, vending machines and food items in the Gift Shoppe.
A recent ceremony was held at the hospital to reveal that WDMH has been awarded silver status in the program.
Champlain Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Network Chair Dr. Andrew Pipe says WDMH is among a small, but growing number of hospitals, that are reaching this milestone.
Staff say the move is all about introducing nutritional information and new options that are healthier for all customers.
